Gunnison's established in 1874 started as a ranching and mining centre. As in many areas of Colorado that experienced mining booms, Gunnison also experienced large growth in ranching and agriculture during that time. Ranches supplied beef, fruits and vegetables to store keepers who in turn supplied the miners. Although today Gunnison serves primarily as a recreatinal gateway to national forests and streams, Gunnison still is home to some of the most scenic ranches in Colorado.
